ADEVARATELE CAUZE ALE MARII SCHISME. THE TRUE CAUSES OF SCHISM

 

Credem de multe ori că schisma este cauzată de erezie, dar de cele mai multe ori se întâmplă ca erezia să fie doar un pretext al schismei, iar adevăratul motiv se află în cu totul altă parte. În eseul său „Polaritate culturală şi Schismă religioasă”, marele istoric Christopher Dawson scria: „În spatele fiecărei erezii stă un fel de conflict social, iar unitatea poate fi restaurată doar prin rezolvarea acestui conflict.”

El dă ca şi exemplu schisma Armeană din timpul Sinodului Ecumenic de la Calcedon. „Cu toate acestea, chiar de la început este evident că patimile ce au umplut străzile Alexandriei cu tumultul şi vărsare de sânge şi i-a împis pe episcopi să se lupte ca şi animalele sălbatice, nu au fost inspirate de o dorinţă pură pentru adevărul teologic sau alte motive pur religioase de nici un fel.” Dawson continuă şi analizează cauzele sociologice din spatele schismelor – inclusiv cea a protestantismului european din timpul Reformei – dar mai ales cea ortodoxă.

Este evident că Schisma ortodocşilor faţă de Biserica Catolică a avut alte motive decât cele teologice. Într-adevăr, citind istoria evenimentelor Schismei, ruptura dintre Răsăritul Grec şi Apusul Latin, la care se adaugă mândria arogantă a liderilor ambelor părţi, reiese foarte clar din diferenţele culturale, politice şi geografice atât de adânci, care au contribuit la Schismă mai mult decât minorele diferenţe relativ teologice. Deci, în timp ce la problemele teologice trebuie să se lucreze intens – ceea ce deja fac Comisiile de dialog Catolico-Ortodoxe (nt. iniţiate şi susţinute tot de Biserica Catolică) – adevărata vindecare a Schismei va veni prin umilinţă profundă din partea ambelor părţi.

În opinia unora, Biserica Catolică şi liderii ei trebuie să-şi plece genunchii şi să îşi ceară iertare întâi. Cel mai mare trebuie să se umilească! Şi, trebuie subliniat că Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea şi Papa Benedict al XVI-lea au făcut-o deja de multe ori:

1. După ce a ajuns în Scaunul Sfântului Petru, Papa Benedict XVI-lea a renunţat la titlul de „Patriarh al Occidentului”;
2. Fericitul Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea a redat o icoană veche Bisericii Ortodoxe Ruse.

Interesant, ambele acţiuni au fost întâmpinate cu batjocură în mai multe medii Ortodoxe, aducând parcă aminte de aforismul: „Nici o faptă bună să nu rămână NEPEDEPSITĂ”. Dar nu contează! Lucrul important pentru Biserica Catolică este să arate în continuare umilinţă, care prin harul divin va înmuia inimile ortodocşilor şi în cele din urmă îi vor permite Mântuitorului să vindece Schisma.

Dawson îşi încheie eseul într-o manieră plină de speranţă: „Cred că era Schismei trece şi este timpul ca principiul divin al vieţii Bisericii să îşi revendice puterea atractivă, schiţând toate elementele vieţii şi gândirii creştine spre unitate organică. Pentru că Hristos este Capul Bisericii şi Spiritul Sfânt este viaţa Bisericii; oriunde este credinţă în Hristos şi Spiritul Sfânt, acolo este spiritul unităţii şi calea spre reuniune.”

 

 The True Causes of Schism

We often think schism is caused by heresy, but often it is the case that a heresy is merely propped up as an excuse for the schism, when the real motives lie elsewhere.

In his essay, “Cultural Polarity and Religious Schism,” the great historian Christopher Dawson wrote:

Behind every heresy lies some kind of social conflict, and it is only by the resolution of this conflict that unity can be restored.

He gives as an example the Armenian schism at the time of the Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon.

Yet even from the beginning it is obvious that the passions which filled the steets of Alexandria with tumult and bloodshed and set bishops fighting like wild animals were not inspired by a pure desire for theological truth or even by purely religious motives of any kind.

Dawson goes on to analyze the sociological causes behind schisms, including that of Protestantism in Europe during the time of the Reformation, but I want to focus more specifically on the Orthodox schism.

It seems clear to me that the Orthodox schism from the Catholic Church was caused by motives other than theological. Indeed, reading the history of the events of the schism, the rift between the Latin West and Greek East, coupled with the overweening pride of the leaders on both sides, it is clear that such deep cultural, political, and geographic differences contributed to the schism more than the relatively minor theological differences.

So while the theological problems need to be intensely worked on–which is just what the Catholic-Orthodox commissions are doing currently–the real healing of the schism will only come through deep humility on the part of both parties…and a willingness to extend the other the benefit of the doubt.

In my view, it is the Catholic Church and her leaders who must bend the knee in apology first. The bigger man must lower himself. And, I would point out that JPII and Pope Benedict have already done this multiple times:

1. After raised to the chair of Peter, Benedict promptly dropped the title “Patriarch of the West”
2. JPII returned a revered icon to the Russian Orthodox Church

Interestingly, both of these actions were met with derision in several Orthodox quarters, calling to mind the aphorism, “let no good deed go unpunished.” But it doesn’t matter. The important thing is for the Catholic Church to continue to show humility, which by God’s grace will soften the hearts of the Orthodox and ultimately allow Christ to heal the schism.

Dawson ends his essay on a hopeful note:

I believe that the age of schism is passing and that the time has come when the divine principle of the Church’s life will assert its attractive power, drawing all the living elements of Christian life and thought into organic unity.

For since Christ is the Head of the Church and the Holy Spirit is the life of the Church, wherever there is faith in Christ and the Spirit of Christ there is the spirit of unity and the means of reunion.

 Moscova i-ar fi propus liderului transnistrean, Igor Smirnov, să plece de bunăvoie la pensie, în schimbul protecţiei de care va beneficia. Potrivit cotidianului rus „Kommersant”, Moscova ar fi gata să îi asigure lui Smirnov şi familiei sale nu doar securitatea, dar şi continuarea afacerilor.

Sursa citată menţionează că propunerile au fost făcute în timpul negocierilor în formatul „5+2”, de marţi, de la Moscova. De asemenea, Rusia ar fi gata să-l susţină pe contracandidatul lui Smirnov, Anatolii Kaminskii.

„Kommersant” scrie că deschiderea Rusiei faţă de conflictul transnistrean ar putea determina o creştere semnificativă a presiunii asupra actualului lider de la Tiraspol. Astfel, în cazul în care Rusia reuşeşte să-l convingă pe Smirnov şi va urma o schimbare a regimului din autoproclamata republică nistreană, atunci o reconciliere cu Moldova va fi mai probabilă, notează „Kommersant”. Deocamdată, Smirnov nu a dat niciun răspuns propunerii venite din partea Moscovei.
